Live wedding illustration: what it is and how it works

What live wedding illustration is, how it fits into your day and why every guest takes home a portrait with your monogram and the wedding date on it.

Live wedding illustration is easy to explain. During the celebration, Alba sits at a table with her paper and colours and draws your guests on the spot, one at a time or in groups. Every portrait carries your monogram and the wedding date, and whoever is in it takes it home at the end of the night. The drawing is for the guest, not for you: a small keepsake shared out among the people who came to celebrate with you.

What live wedding illustration is

It's one more corner of the wedding, like the cocktail bar or the photo booth, with someone drawing in it. Guests come over, stand in front of Alba (on their own, as a couple, with the cousins, with grandma) and watch themselves appear on the paper.

The style is simple but expressive: colour, watercolour washes and figures without facial features. Alba isn't after a studio likeness. She picks up whatever makes someone recognisable at a glance, like the dress, the posture, the hair pinned up or an arm round the shoulders of an old friend. People recognise themselves and laugh, even with no eyes or mouth on the page.

Your initials and the date go under every drawing. That's what makes it a wedding keepsake: years from now, whoever finds it will know where it came from.

How it fits into the day

The illustration doesn't take the spotlight from anything. Nothing stops so people can watch. The table is just there, with its tablecloth, easel and sign, and guests wander over when they feel like it. During the drinks reception, between courses or once the party starts, there's always someone waiting their turn and someone peering over a shoulder.

While they wait, guests who'd never met start chatting, children stand and watch the colour go on, and someone talks grandma into getting in the picture with the grandkids. It's a quiet activity, with no microphone and no choreography, and it gets people talking.

Our weddings page has everything we can bring to your celebration.

Why guests take it home

Some wedding favours get left on the table at the end of the night, especially the ones that are identical for a hundred people. Live illustration works the other way round. Each guest takes their own drawing, in their own outfit, with whoever stood next to them. They watched it being made, which gives it a value a wrapped object left on a chair doesn't have. And because it carries your names and the date, it can't be separated from the day.

That's why we call it a keepsake you carry home on paper. We take the idea further in our piece on wedding guest favours that don't end up in a drawer.

A wedding isn't only remembered for the music or the menu. It's remembered for the details that move people, for the unexpected, for what connects.

Who's behind the pencil

SutilEvents started in Valencia as Alba's personal project. She's a tattoo artist and illustrator who began, like most people who draw, with a sketchbook, and one day decided to bring what she loves most to events: drawing and art. Her tattoo work is in our tattoos section.

What to decide beforehand

You don't need to prepare much, but it helps to have a few things clear when you get in touch:

  • The date and the venue, so we know whether we're free and where we'll set up.
  • Which part of the day you want it for: drinks, dinner, the party or all of it. It changes how the table is organised.
  • Your monogram. If you already have initials designed for the invitations, tell us when you write.
  • Whether you'd like to add anything. Some couples add mini tattoos for the braver guests; we explain how that works in mini tattoos at your wedding.

Each service is described on our services page. If you already have a date, the quickest way is to ask for a quote: tell us the day, the place and what you have in mind, and we'll reply on WhatsApp.
