Organising village fiestas in the Ribera Alta is a bit of a puzzle. Whoever is in charge this year, the fiesta committee, the falla or the local association, wants something for everyone: a full square, older neighbours out of the house, and young people who don't head off to the next town's party instead. Ideally, there's also something this year that wasn't on last year. Here are some ideas for fiesta weeks, patron saint festivals and Fallas, and where live art fits in.

What already works at a village fiesta

Before looking for something original, it's worth remembering what always works. Fiestas across the Ribera, in Alzira, Carlet, Algemesí or Alberic, have their classics, and for good reason:

  • Communal meals: paella in the street, the sopar de germanor, an afternoon snack in the square. They get everyone round the same table.
  • Music, whether it's a dance band, a brass charanga or a mobile disco. There's no fiesta night without it.
  • Things for the kids: bouncy castles, water games, workshops, hot chocolate. If the kids are having fun, the parents stay.
  • Each village's own traditions, like the procession, the flower offering, the parade, the bulls or the Fallas. That's what gives each place its character.

That fills the programme. What's often missing is something people are still talking about the next day.

Original ideas for this year's fiestas

A few suggestions that go down well without making the committee's logistics harder:

  • Contests with a twist: themed fancy dress, grandma's desserts, old photos of the village. They get people talking and bring whole families along.
  • Open-air cinema in the square. A screen, some plastic chairs and a film that grandparents and grandchildren both enjoy.
  • Trails or treasure hunts round the village, so visitors find corners the locals have stopped noticing.
  • Workshops for old and young together. Anything that mixes ages tends to go better than anything that splits them.
  • Live art: a table in the square where someone draws whoever passes by, or a mini tattoo corner for the evening. It can be seen from across the square and everyone takes something away.

Live art at village fiestas in the Ribera Alta

What we bring to weddings has a place in a village square too, with the same idea behind it: a personal moment in the middle of a shared celebration.

Live illustration is a table with paper and colours where Alba draws whoever comes over: an elderly couple, a group of friends in their peña T-shirts, a mother with her baby. The style is simple and expressive, in colour, and everyone takes their drawing home. At a wedding, each drawing carries the couple's monogram and the date. At a fiesta it makes sense for it to carry something of the village or the year, so the portrait also becomes a keepsake of those fiestas.

Mini tattoos are for the evening and for the brave. In a corner with its own lighting and atmosphere, anyone who wants one gets a small fine line tattoo: the falla's emblem, the year of the fiestas, the bell tower, a word in Valencian. In a village, where the fiesta is part of who people are, wearing it on your skin makes a lot of sense.

We describe how it plays out at a wedding in live wedding illustration and mini tattoos at your wedding. Our celebrations page explains how we approach village fiestas, communions, birthdays and company events.

Why it works in a village

Village fiestas are mostly a place to meet people. The activities that go best are the ones that let people stop and talk, more than the most spectacular ones.

An illustration table does exactly that. A queue forms, people look over each other's shoulders, everyone comments on who's in the drawing. It needs no stage or sound system and doesn't compete with the band or the communal dinner: it sits at one side of the square alongside whatever else is on.

What to tell us

If you're on the fiesta committee, in a falla or in an association and you're thinking about something like this, write to us with:

  • The village and the dates, so we know whether we're available and where we'd set up.
  • What you're interested in: live illustration, mini tattoos or both.
  • The time of day. Afternoon with families, evening with the open-air dance, or during a communal meal.
  • Whether you'd like it personalised with the fiesta's motto, the falla's name or the year.

Both services are explained on our services page. Once you have dates, ask for a quote and we'll reply on WhatsApp.
